Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) are laws that have spread around the world since one of the first in Denver Colorado. This law restricts, Bans, or complicates owning or having certain breeds of dogs. Many people around the world oppose these laws while law enforcement continues to have to enforce them. BSL can require you to License, Muzzle, and insure your pet. In some areas they can even put you in jail or euthanize your pet for not obeying the law. It has also gone as far as removing the animal from the home.
Many areas around the world have passed Breed Specific laws with the hope to slow down illegal activities, one example is Dog fighting rings. In other areas it was to reduce the amount of vicious dogs, dog bites and attacks. The argument behind BSL is it will reduce illegal activities and create safer communities. The problem is that any dog can be trained to be viscous or act in an aggressive manner. The breeds banned by BSL vary along with requirements
If BSL is threatening your neighborhood and you are wondering how to challenge or argue it, be ready for a long journey. some of the most common ways are to attend council meetings, create petitions, and write your local law makers.
There are a few tips and tricks that are important when trying to convince people to take your side. You always need a strong argument with evidence. A common argument with BSL is the cost of enforcing these laws (It may vary). Another is that BSL punishes good people and dogs. The last one is that there is no evidence showing these laws are effective. It is important to be professional and show as many facts with solid evidence behind them as possible.
